Ask Polow Da Don, “Lil Jon Ruined Music” and Jay-Z Isn’t Cool
I’ve got enough magazines to fuel barbecues for two summers. Thumbing through the unflipped pile last night, I caught this quote from Polow Da Don aka the latest hot producer to come from the South.
In a Scratch article he took a stab at deciphering the music environment in which we live.
"What I feel we’re experiencing now is a collective effort of mediocrity. Everybody has a catchy song, as opposed to a great song. I got some friends that argue that Lil Jon ruined music [laughs]. Lil Jon is a good friend of mine.. But we was having this discussion, like, ‘Lil Jon, you were the first one to show people that even if you don’t know how to rap at all, you can still make a hit record.’"
He took a breath and continued..
"“A lot of people try to mimic his 808 style, but it’s not as quality. Lil Jon knows how to put a song together. So you have a lot of *hit song* ringtones out there, but no one is selling records, because it’s not connecting. It’s not soulful. It doesn’t mean anything.”

I find that odd coming from the man responsible for Rich Boy’s life-tracking classic, “Throw Some D’s”, but if I can use the Shakespearean tongue, he speaketh wisdom from thine vestibule of Hennessy inspired truth.
Polow also said Jay-Z was no longer cool.. “Jim Jones took his coolness away”..
"The only people who think Jay-Z is cool right now are, like, you know, 35 and older, and hate current music."

Haha. I laugh because, well, there is truth there too. But I don’t think anyone was listening to or was influenced by the words of Jimmy Jones enough to use them as a thermometer for Jay’s temperature.
You can call Polow, not just Da Don, he’s also the doctor.
Polow submitted a track for Kingdom Come, he dubbed it the prescription to put the warmth back in Jay-Z’s body. It was a last minute submission - reason why it didn’t get picked up?
Outside of the guest spot on Juvenile’s “Ha!”, don’t know if Jay-Z has ever spit over a Southern producer’s track. You gotta believe that Jay-Z heard this ‘not cool’ talk by now. Anyone willing to deviate from the yes man plan is gonna get his attention, and Polow’s claim to be a musical savant should challenge him to deliver something on the edge of spectacular.
The thought is enough to salivate over Jay-Z’s second attempt to bounce out of retirement. TBA.

I somewhat agree with you. I’m only 30. I hate the current rap/hip hop music. These songs have no thought and/or creativity put into them. These are not new stories being told, it’s the same story that was told by Biggie and Tupac with just new beats and some angry inexperience young tennie boppers who believe they know it all.
