Christina Milian
Christina Milian - So Amazin
 (Def Jam Records)

Is 'Say I' the best song Christina Milian has ever made? I can't answer that question because I couldn't name one other Christina Milian record. So Amazing is her third LP, and that my friends is so amazing. There are good people in the music business, people who lack that certain something that gives them an identity. Christina Milian is definitely one of those people who you can't say anything bad about; take a look at her, "dime," "beautiful," "I'd hit that," they all apply. Judging from her time on TRL and the movie Love Don't Cost a Thing, she has a nice personality to go along with the azz-ets. None of that translates into being a fantastic music artist. Although it does makes a fine wallpaper. Feel free to click.

I heard 'Say I' in clubs and the radio, enjoying it to the full, before I knew it was a CM song; when you hear a song and ask the person next to you who's singing, it's evidence that artist is hitting the right touch points. 'Say I,' there's a familiarity to the sound, the singing style, you know it. In this case, it's so familiar because if someone told you it was from Beyonce's new album you wouldn't be smacked for being Mr. Gullible. This could easily be a Beyonce song. I'm convinced she's hatin it was wasted on a Christina Milian album. J.Lo wouldn't have minded using it either.

Throughout the album Christina Milian seems to still be struggling with finding her identity. Instead of being who she is and amplifying that, she and her cohorts at Def Jam have decided to throw a bit of this and that on the wall and see what sticks. So what you get is "Hot Boy" more..

Throughout the album Christina Milian seems to still be struggling with finding her identity. Instead of being who she is and amplifying that, she and her cohorts at Def Jam have decided to throw a bit of this and that on the wall and see what sticks. So what you get is "Hot Boy" a horrendous revisiting of territory previously covered by Missy. Albeit Christina is saying she can be your hot girl. It's miscued by the fact that she's this nice girl, who knows nothing of being a down to ride chick from the hood. On "Who's Gonna Ride" she pairs up with Three Six Mafia, for a somewhat more listenable song, that has her hanging out with the guy her friends said she shouldn't be with, for whatever reason, now she's gone, who's gonna be there for him now. "Who's Gonna Ri.. rii. Rii. Rid. Ii iiiide" If you can get to the chorus, that lil stutter piece sells the song.

What can't be sold is Christina and Three Six Mafia in a collaboration.

It's not just posing as a thug princess that's unsettling. On "So Amazing" she's in party mode. Now she's the sexy, temptress in the club. Even recognizing her looks as tempting, in the song it sounds synthetic and about as tempting as fake tits. The beat sounds nice, the chorus is catchy and then you squeeze it and pop a hole in the nipple.

There are times like on "Just A Little Bit" where she sounds like Ashanti. Something I wouldn't advise considering the tomatoes Ashanti dodges on stage. Not for any good reason, but that's another story.

My knock on So Amazing is 90% of the songs come across as someone singing from the outside in, as opposed to it coming from the heart. The 10% that works is "My Lovin Goes" [a slow tempo song that sounds like something that'd be on the radio every time you turn it on.. for her, that's a good thing.], "She Don't Know" [another slow-tempo song with a smattering of Spanish in the chorus.. again, if you get that far, it's nice.] and of course "Say I" [uplifting, celebratory lyrics and sound that goes down so easy you can hit repeat a thousand times.. doesn't even need Young Jeezy's verse, that's when you cycle back to the beginning.]

There are singers and there are entertainers, few can carry both, those that do tend to be superstars. Christina is an entertainer who hasn't found a way to entertain yet. "Say I" is her best song to date. She'll be able to build off it with the right video, but anyone who buys the album though will be thinking, Why I?

The Industry Says

Stylus Magazine - C- "As physically exploitative and embarrassing as the “Dip It Low” video was, the cranky, only kinda-motivational storm in a tea cup vibe from So Amazin’ does nothing but put her recording career firmly in reverse.. So Amazin’ isn’t quite pop and it isn’t quite rebellion—it’s straight-up high school. And a pretty, motivated young person like Milian is supposed to put those things behind her along with the notebooks, pep squad dance routines, and lunch room beefs."

Dotmusic/Yahoo UK - 7 out of 10 "Without question, it's a proper album, not the usual random collection of songs tied-together with phone skits. In fact, it's almost the perfect R&B album; cool, sexy, inventive and suitably stylish throughout. All that's missing is a couple of killer singles.. "Say I"'s a great single, it's just not the stuff household names are made of.

Entertainment Weekly - - "Milian's limp attempt at a sassy, street-friendly R&B sound simply lacks bite and believability."
