Ghostface - The Pretty Toney LP
 (Def Jam Records)

- reviewed by Chris G

I listen to rap, but I love hip-hop. Rap is that formulaic, let's do what the next man did last week and get paid crap. You nod and sing along out of some radio programmed hypnosis. Hip-hop is passion. It can be passionately negative or positive. What makes it valid is when the sounds popping out of the speakers give the impression the person really believes what they say and speaks the truth.

On The Pretty Toney LP Ghostface's passion is all over the disc. He shouts, screams, and sings his way through 18 tracks like a hungry newjack and with the skill of the veteran he is at the same time. Easily making it, along with Kanye West, the best album released in these few months of 2004.

For Ghostface, it's his most cohesive album to date. His previous albums had moments and at times bizarre rambling. Here he finds a way to recombine it into a consistent all out sonic assault.

From the familiar Wu-Tang bounce of "Biscuits" to the slow crawling, sub rumbling "Kunta Fly Shit" and the infectious head nodding "Beat the Clock" it's that head nodding material that has been lacking big time in my CD collection. more..

From the familiar Wu-Tang bounce of "Biscuits" to the slow crawling, sub rumbling "Kunta Fly Shit" and the infectious head nodding "Beat the Clock" it's that head nodding material that has been lacking big time in my CD collection. This entire joint had me driving through the streets of NYC, windows at half mast, cutting off taxis with one hand and a finger pointed at the window shield. In addition to the parental advisory sticker there should be a "guaranteed to have you wilding out" sticker stuck to the case.

The guests on the album are limited to Trife on "Biscuits"; Sheek and Styles P on "Metal Loungies"; Missy Elliot on "Tush", which comes as close to commercial you're gonna get here; that Jacki-O chick on "Tooken Back, sounding suprisingly decent (the beat is the real star of that track) and the insanely hype Jadakiss tag team track "Run." It doesn't get much better than this, definite felony music. After you're done knocking things over.. You realize there is one track left, "Love" featuring Musiq calms things in a way that leaves you satisfied until the next disc rotation.

If there are any flaws it would be the skits, but honestly only the bathroom skit gets skipped. I have no desire to hear Ghost and some chick splashing around in a tub.

You wanna know what's in my CD changer, at the top of the Ipod playlist? This Pretty Toney shit. Do yourself a favor and cop this; fuck a bootleg, let this man get those scan points off a retail purchase.

The Industry Says

Loosie.com - - "One of the most enjoyable things about following Ghostface’s music is his continuous improvement. Like a veteran pitcher who experiments with new grips for his four-seam fastball during the off-season, Ghost is always tinkering with the special techniques of shadowboxing. The crying flow, the multiple-syllable word strings, the intricate sing-along hooks, the rapping over entire soul records (vocals and all) and the break-beat driven production are organic adaptations, not mimicry."

Nobodysmiling.com - - "Basically cop this album its worth it."

NY Times - - "Pretty Toney" doesn't match the high standard of Ghostface's first two, "Ironman" and "Supreme Clientele," but it's a strong album nonetheless, packed with dense narratives and weird conceits."
